1. Top speed and a removable handrail

Walking-only pads stop at about 6 km/h. If you might ever jog or run, you need a 2-in-1 model with a removable handrail rated for higher speed. This is the biggest difference between walking pads priced from about KSh 22,000 to KSh 35,000 in Kenya.

2. Weight capacity

Check the stated capacity against the heaviest person likely to use it. Most home units are rated at about 100 to 120 kg. Using a pad at or above its limit shortens the life of the motor.

3. A motor built for daily use

A motor rated for short bursts will overheat sooner under daily use than one built for continuous duty. A listing rarely tells you this, so ask the seller directly whether the motor is rated for daily, continuous use.

4. Space and noise at home

Measure the space where you will use it. Our walking pad needs about 1.2 x 0.6 metres in use. If you live upstairs, plan for a rubber mat underneath to cut noise for the people below. Our noise guide explains what your neighbours will hear.

5. Delivery and payment terms

Confirm that the unit is in stock and when it will arrive before you pay anything. Where you can, choose a seller who lets you pay after delivery. That way, if the unit does not match the listing, you have not lost any money.

6. A real address you can visit

A seller with a physical shop gives you somewhere to go if something goes wrong, and a chance to see the unit running before you buy. That matters if you ever need to make a warranty claim.
