How much space does a small treadmill need?

Leave a clear space behind the treadmill so you can step off safely, ideally about a metre. Folded, it takes about the floor space of a large suitcase standing on end.

Where a compact, space saving treadmill fits

• Bedsitter or studio: use it beside the bed, then slide it under the bed when you finish.
• One-bedroom sitting room: walk in front of the TV in the evening, then stand it behind the sofa.

Small, and still a real treadmill

Many small treadmills stop at a fast walk. Ours has two modes:

• Handrail down: walks at 1 to 6 km/h, for desk walking, TV time and gentle recovery
• Handrail up: runs at up to 14 km/h, for jogging and interval training

Mini treadmill, compact treadmill or walking pad?

Shops in Kenya use these names loosely. Here is what they usually mean:

• Mini treadmill or walking pad: a flat, low belt with no handrail, for walking only at up to about 6 km/h. About KSh 22,000.
• Compact 2-in-1 treadmill: a walking pad with a removable handrail that also runs, at up to about 14 km/h. Ours is KSh 24,800.
• Folding full-size treadmill: a big treadmill whose deck lifts up. It saves some floor space, but stays tall and heavy.

Small treadmill tips for apartments

1. Put a thick rubber gym mat underneath to cut vibration and protect tiles.
2. Plug it straight into a wall socket, or use a heavy-duty extension cable.
3. Walk early or late, and save running for the daytime if you have neighbours below.
4. Fold it away after each session, which also keeps it away from children and pets.
