Walking Treadmill: A Treadmill Made for Walking at Home

A walking treadmill, often called a walking pad, is a low, slim treadmill built for walking. It has no bulky frame, so it fits under a desk or a bed. If most of your exercise is walking, this is the treadmill that suits you best. Ours also runs at up to 14 km/h on the days you want more.

What makes a good treadmill for walking

  • Low, controllable speeds. Ours starts at 1 km/h, so you can begin slowly and build up.
  • A slim, low deck. It sits under a standard desk with the handrail folded down.
  • A cushioned deck. It is softer on knees and hips than tile or concrete floors.
  • A remote control. You change speed without bending down or stopping.
  • A clear display. The LED screen shows speed, time, distance and calories, so you can track progress.
  • Easy storage. It folds flat and rolls on built-in wheels.

Walking speeds and what they feel like

Speed How it feels Approx. steps per minute Time for 10,000 steps
1 to 2 km/h Getting started, learning to type while walking Below 85 Over 2 hours
3 km/h Slow, easy desk-walking pace About 85 About 118 minutes
4 km/h Comfortable walking About 105 About 95 minutes
5 km/h Brisk walking About 120 About 83 minutes
6 km/h Fast walking About 135 About 74 minutes

These figures assume an average adult stride. Taller people reach 10,000 steps a little faster. Read more in our guide to how long 10,000 steps takes on a walking pad.

How much walking fits into a normal day

Short sessions add up. Walk for 15 to 20 minutes during a morning call, another 15 to 20 in the afternoon, and 30 minutes while you watch TV in the evening. That gets most people close to 8,000 to 10,000 steps without a separate workout.

If weight loss is your goal, our guide to how many steps a day to lose weight shows a realistic plan.

When you want more than a walk

Walking-only treadmills stop at about 6 km/h. Ours is a 2-in-1 model. Lift the handrail and it runs at up to 14 km/h, so you can add short jogging intervals and cover more steps in less time. Five minutes at 10 to 12 km/h covers roughly 900 to 1,100 steps, about twice what you cover in five minutes at 4 km/h. See running on a walking pad for sessions to try.

Foldable Walking Pad Treadmill

A foldable walking pad treadmill for home and office. Walk at 1 to 6 km/h under a desk, or lift the handrail and run at up to 14 km/h.
