Treadmill for Running at Home: Jog on a Walking Pad at up to 14 km/h

Most walking pads stop at about 6 km/h, which is a fast walk. Ours has a handrail that lifts up and unlocks speeds of up to 14 km/h. That means you can jog, run intervals and train at home on any day, in any weather.

Is a walking pad good for running?

Only a 2-in-1 model. Most walking pads stop at about 6 km/h, which is a fast walk. Ours has a handrail that lifts up and unlocks speeds of up to 14 km/h, enough for jogging, 5K training and intervals. For long runs faster than 14 km/h, a full-size treadmill is the better tool.

What 14 km/h means for your running

Speed Pace per km Time for 5 km
8 km/h 7:30 37:30
10 km/h 6:00 30:00
12 km/h 5:00 25:00
14 km/h About 4:17 About 21:26

That range covers easy jogging, steady runs and fast intervals for most home runners.

Running sessions to try

  • Easy jog: 5 minutes walking to warm up, 15 to 20 minutes at a comfortable jogging speed, 5 minutes walking to cool down.
  • Intervals: after a 5-minute walk, alternate 1 minute fast with 2 minutes walking, 6 times, then cool down.
  • Walk and run: walk most of the session at 5 to 6 km/h and add 5 to 10 minutes of faster running in short blocks.

Short faster intervals also help you cover your step count in less time. Five minutes at 10 to 12 km/h covers roughly 900 to 1,100 steps.

Running safely on a walking pad

  1. Keep the handrail up whenever you run.
  2. Start every session at a low speed and build up.
  3. Know where the stop control is before you start.
  4. Wear proper running shoes with grip.
  5. Stay within the weight capacity.
  6. Keep the belt lubricated, especially if you run often. Our maintenance guide shows how.

Running upstairs without bothering the neighbours

Running is louder than walking, and footstep impact carries through concrete floors. Put a rubber gym mat under the walking pad and run in the daytime. Read more in our noise guide.

Why run indoors in Kenya

Rain, darkness from about 7pm and traffic fumes on main roads all get in the way of outdoor running. A walking pad lets you train whatever the conditions. Many runners mix both: outdoors on good days, indoors when it rains or gets late. See indoor walking vs running outdoors in Nairobi.

When a full-size treadmill is the better choice

If you train for a marathon and run for an hour or more at 16 km/h or faster, a full-size treadmill's longer belt and higher top speed matter. For 5 to 10 km sessions at a moderate pace, a 2-in-1 walking pad does the job. Compare them in walking pad vs treadmill.

Foldable Walking Pad Treadmill

Frequently asked questions

Can you run on a walking pad?
On a 2-in-1 model, yes. Ours runs at up to 14 km/h with the handrail up. Walking-only pads stop at about 6 km/h, which is a fast walk.
How fast does your walking pad go?
1 to 6 km/h with the handrail folded down for desk walking, and up to 14 km/h with the handrail up for running.
Can I train for a 5K or 10K on it?
For most home runners doing 5 to 10 km sessions at a moderate pace, yes. Marathon training at high speed suits a full-size treadmill better.
Is it loud when running?
Running is louder than walking, mainly from footstep impact. A rubber mat underneath helps a lot, and daytime running is kinder to neighbours below.
